55Knots approached me to create a video featuring their mascot, Captain Koko. The video would act as a bumper for their website and spark curiosity about their services. Rather than a typical explainer video, they wanted something with a narrative—a superhero origin story, to be precise.

The Concept
The story follows a person who becomes consumed by an overwhelming workload, symbolized by drowning in a sea of tasks and eventually being devoured by a Kraken, representing the breakdown of their mental state. Captain Koko serves as a guiding figure, offering support to the client, specifically in the creative aspects of their brand.
Styleframes
Initially, the client had an internally created design, but it didn’t align with their website at the time. We developed new styleframes, incorporating neon elements to better match the aesthetic of their brand and website.
Character Design
Animation
The scenes in the project were brought to life using a combination of 3D animation, puppet animation, and frame-by-frame techniques. This blend of methods allowed for a dynamic and visually diverse storytelling experience.
In the process of animating similar scenes. I’ve used a plugin in After Effects, the Joysticks & Sliders, to create the rig for the character. Most of the rigged characters were made this way.
On this particular scene, I’ve combined hand drawn animation through Adobe Animate, 3D Animation through Cinema4D and Animation in After Effects.
